Possible upcoming feature in Google Messages: Ability to edit already sent messages
If you have experience with Apple’s iMessage or are familiar with sending text messages through an instant messaging app like WhatsApp, you understand the convenience of editing messages. This not only saves you from possible confusion, but also maintains the flow of your conversation without corrections.
Although Google Messages has received RCS support, this functionality is missing. Nevertheless, it looks like that will all change soon, as the app will reportedly gain the ability to edit messages after they’ve been sent.
As discovered by AssembleDebug on TheSpAndroid, evidence of the same was found in the code of the Google Messages app. According to the report, the edit function works when users long press on a message in RCS chat. After this, a pencil icon appears on the top line. When you tap the pencil icon, a text box will open so you can edit the message.
The report further states, “Although the edit button has appeared, the functionality does not work as expected because there may be work to be done.” This likely means it may be a while before we see the same public rollout. According to the report, it could also enter the beta stage at the end of this month or next month.
However, it may prove to be a useful addition for users who primarily communicate through Google Messages. Although the user base is remarkably small, it is still a valuable feature.
